Scholarships 2023
- Scholarship 1: Merit-cum-Means (MCM) Scholarships Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur gives Merit-cum-Means (MCM) Scholarships to deserving and needy students. Details and Criteria are given below:
- Up to 25% of the students in a batch may be awarded the MCM scholarship. From the total number of MCM Scholarships available in each batch, 20% shall be reserved for students belonging to the SC/ST category. The SC/ST students are not to be compared with the GN/OBC students.
- The MCM scholarships unutilized in a batch may be transferred to another batch. Similarly, the MCM scholarships unutilized in SC/ST category may be transferred to other category students.
- A student should have a CPI of 6.5 or above to be eligible to receive a full MCM scholarship (freeship + pocket allowance). If the CPI of a student falls below 6.5 (but remains above 6.0), then the pocket allowance is withdrawn.
- For the first year, UG students, common JEE-AIR or marks obtained will be used for awarding the MCM scholarship.
- To receive the MCM scholarship, a student must not have had an ‘F’ grade(s) in one or more courses in the last two regular semesters.
- The total Family Annual Income (TFAI) of the student from all sources should be less than 6.0 lacs.
- The student must not be getting any other scholarship either from IIT Kanpur or from any other external sources.
- Scholarship 2: Inspire Scholarships The Department of Science and Technology (DST) at Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur, Government of India gives Scholarships for Higher Education (SHE), called INSPIRE-SHE Scholarships, to the students enrolled in undergraduate programs in natural and basic sciences all across the country in order to inspire them to become leading scientists.
- Students pursuing 4-Year BS and 5-Year BS-MS Dual Degree programs in natural and basic sciences AND have secured rank within the top 10,000 in JEE-AIR are eligible to apply for INSPIRE Scholarship.
- Applicants must have secured marks within the top 1% of their board
- Applicants must have secured a rank within the top 10,000 in JEE-AIR
- Applicants are KVPY, NTSE, JBNSTS scholars, or International Olympiad medalist
- As per the DST guidelines, the students pursuing a BS program in Economics and B. Tech./Dual-Degree programs in Engineering are NOT eligible to receive INSPIRE Scholarship.
- If applicants have failed in one or more courses or their CPI is below 7.0, then they are NOT eligible to receive INSPIRE scholarship.
- The IIT Kanpur facilitates the application and award process for its students as per the DST guidelines available at: http://www.inspire-dst.gov.in/SHE.html.
- A student must apply for the Inspire Scholarship on the prescribed application form before the last date for submitting the application form.

- Is there any guest house for parents/ guardians to stay in?
Parents and guardians will be provided accommodation for the pre-orientation phase i.e. from 12-14th July. However, from 15th July onwards no accommodation will be provided to parents. It is requested that you make reservations outside the campus. Parents are not allowed to stay on campus under any circumstances after the 15th of July. Please find the list of hotels attached. - Whether we have to open the bank account there or can we open the account before reaching there also?
It isn’t mandatory to open a bank account here. You can very well open an account elsewhere and transfer it to the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur branch. (Note that cheque payments from accounts in other branches are not allowed). But we would suggest that you wait to open the account till you come here. You would not require any specific documents, ID proofs, etc except those issued by the college upon your arrival and also you will be provided with assistance in form filling and opening an account - What will be the monthly expenses (approx.) for a fresher including mess, stationary some other student expenses?
A mess advance has to be paid in the respective hall offices. Regarding the monthly expenditure, the basic mess bill for a vegetarian comes to about Rs.1200/- per month. Items like milk, eggs, butter, and non-vegetarian preparations are available on extra payment. Apart from the basic mess expenditure, about Rs.1000/- per month should be sufficient for other expenses such as washerman, stationery, etc.
