Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral courses under 11 constituent departments, four interdisciplinary schools, and five centers. It offers courses in the fields of Engineering, Science, Architecture, and Pharmacy. Admission to all the courses is entrance-based. The candidates are selected through national-level tests conducted by various authorities. They need to appear for the respective entrance exam and qualify for its cutoff.

Campus

The campus is spread across 700 acres (2.8 km sq.) plot of land around 20 km from the heart of the city. It has the Brahmaputra on one side and hills and vast open spaces on the other side.

  • Library: The Lakshminath Bezbaroa Central Library is housed in a four stored building. The Library currently has 1,54,564 printed volumes and 2291 subscribed current journals. It has several e-books and an online and abstract database.

  • Hostel: Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati has two girls and nine boys hostel. Each hostel has a multipurpose common room, TV room, T.T. room, and gym. Volleyball courts and badminton courts are also available in some of the hostels. In addition, there is also the reading room with the latest magazines and a plethora of newspapers. Admission Dates 2023

  • JEE Main registration 2023 for session 2 is now open. The last date to apply for the JEE Main session 2 is Mar 14. 
  • JEE Main 2023 second session will be held between Apr 6 and Apr 12, 2023, except Apr 7 & 9.
  • JEE Advanced 2023 exam will be held on Jun 4, 2023, in CBT mode only. JEE advanced registrations will begin on Apr 30, 2023

Student Life

Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati gives its students diverse extra circulars to choose from, it has various clubs for the same. College students play a wide variety of sports and games such as Cricket, Football, Badminton, Basketball, Table tennis, Volleyball, Chess, Lawn Tennis, Athletics, and Aquatics, etc. Students regularly participate in various intra and inter-college completions. The students are free to choose their extra-circulars and change them as and when they wish.

Scholarships 2023

The college awards the following scholarships to its undergraduate/post-graduate students to promote and recognize academic excellence, and the overall growth and development of meritorious students and students with low parental income.

1. Institute Merit Scholarship (IMS) is available for BTech/BDes/MSc/MA students of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, which is meant for the year-wise class toppers of all the streams and is awarded from the second year onward.

2. Institute Merit-cum-Means (McM) Scholarships are awarded to BTech/BDes/MSc/MA students of the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati strictly on merit-cum-means basis to up to 25% of non-SC/ST students. SC-ST Scholarships are awarded to all BTech/BDes/MSc/MA students of SC/ST categories with specified income level

3. Indian Women’s Association, Bonn (IWAB) Scholarship This is a scholarship for first-year undergraduate girl students at the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati based on an endowment from the Indian Women’s Association, Bonn.

Eligibility criteria and relevant information for this:

  • The girl students may apply during the even semester of an academic year.
  • The minimum SPI of 1st semester is 7.0 for the candidate to be eligible to apply for the scholarship.
  • The final recommendation made by the scholarship committee is on the consideration of both merit-cum means of the candidate.
  • A recipient of the McM Scholarship during the same academic period may not be awarded the IWAB scholarship.

  1. How are the placements?
    The placements are good as more than 75% of the students are placed at the end of their graduation. The placement record at IIT Guwahati has been quite impressive over the years. The institute has a dedicated Career Development Centre (CDC) that organizes various recruitment drives and placement activities throughout the year. Top companies from various sectors such as IT, consulting, finance, core engineering, and research & development visit the campus for recruitment. Some of the top recruiters include Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Goldman Sachs, Adobe, Intel, Tata Steel, Tata Motors, etc.

  2. How is the mess?
    The institute has several mess facilities spread across the campus, catering to the needs of students, faculty, and staff. The mess menus are designed to provide a balanced and nutritious diet to the residents. The food is cooked in hygienic conditions and the mess staff ensures that the quality is maintained at all times. The messes also offer a variety of vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, along with options for those with special dietary requirements. The institute has a Mess Committee comprising student representatives, which works closely with the mess staff to ensure that the food quality and service are up to the mark. The committee also takes feedback from the residents and works towards improving the mess facilities.

  3. How to reach the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati?
    The Institute is located just on the outskirts of the city of Guwahati and can be reached conveniently by taxi/auto-rickshaw. It is around 20 km from the heart of the city and around 40 min drive from the airport. To reach the Institute from the city, an Institute bus service can be availed that is serviceable regularly to and from the city.

  4. What about hostel facilities for students?
    The Institute provides hostel facilities to all its students. It has ten hostels for boys and two hostels for girls. The eleventh boys’ hostel will also be ready before the new academic session in 2017. There is also a hostel for married scholars. Most of the hostel rooms are of single occupancy whereas one girls’ hostel has provision for double occupancy. The rooms are well-furnished and equipped with an Internet connection. Each hostel has a dining mess. The hostels have other facilities like a library and reading room, recreation room, sports and fitness facilities, food corners, and stationery shops.

  5. What accommodation is provided to the faculty members?
    All faculty members are provided with first-class quarters. Each two-storied quarter has an ample number of rooms, two or more western-type toilets, a garage, parking space, and often a lawn/small garden in the front. The quarters are situated in a convenient location. Telephone lines are provided to all the quarters. Internet access is available in the quarters
